So a little personal talk here, my dad was an alcoholic. Thankfully my mom and dad weren't together, and I lived with my mom. But sometimes when visiting my dad, he'd drink and start terrorizing me in various ways. He never hit me or anything like that, but there was a lot of yelling and verbal abuse and there was 0 reasoning with him. Alcoholism in parents is a serious and common issue, so I wanted to try to address it in the comic.
Sadly my dad was never the sort to apologize for anything, so at least Hector has that going for him???

It's usually hard for me to pick up on things like that. I thought the father was just lazy but, the little suggestion that he's an alcoholic, really makes the situation more real. I used to think this stuff only happened in "Hey Arnold" with Helga's mom.

In case it's of interest to you, the extreme flushing around the nose is a common artistic shorthand for intoxication.

Saying sorry at least means the guy's not a bad guy at heart, just one with his demon in the bottle.

Ah, I guess that explains a lot. Maybe the real kid was actually kinda' lucky to be taken away from this guy. But on the other hand, it's a sad situation for the changeling.

I'm sorry you had to go through something so terrible like that. I hope you're out of that situation. <3

Often in legends children who were taken by the Fae and replaced by changlings were because for one reason or another the parents weren’t able to take care of the child (like they had a lot and little resources to do so or are alcoholics like this dad) and then give the child a better life and the changling would just waist away eventually.

The fae are also known for turning logs in to fake children that have just this purpose, to pose as the child and waste away while they take care of the real child.

Not sure if this was intended, based on the description for the panel, but usually aggression followed by an empty apology is a sign of a cycle of abusive and remediation just to continue the abuse without the abuser having to feel at fault themselves.

Yep, it's definitely a cycle, apology or not it's still happening and he's still drinking so the apology is a bit empty. And his excuse was poor too, "Daddy's just tired", when he knows for a fact it's more than that.
